Functions

What the UTF-5470A adjusts

PD dial

One central dial sets the PD from 54 to 70 mm, on a 1 mm scale.

Four lens cells per eye

Three cells in front and one behind, with 360° rotation of the lens in the inner ring.

Axis scales

Black scales marked every 5°, increasing anticlockwise: 165°–0°–180°–25° on both sides.

Adjustable nose pad

The nose pad extends by 2 mm, widens by 2 mm and tilts from 0° to 180°.

Adjustable temples

Temple length from 140 to 170 mm.

Full-size aperture

A Ø38 mm effective aperture for full-aperture trial lenses.

Choosing and using a trial frame

How it works

A trial frame holds trial lenses in front of the patient’s eyes at a controlled distance and angle. Set the PD so each lens center sits in front of the pupil, set the height, and adjust the nose pad and temples so the frame sits level.

A trial frame suits patients who find a phoropter difficult: young children, older and low-vision patients, wheelchair users, and high prescriptions, because you can see the patient and set the vertex distance yourself. Put the strongest sphere in the back cell, closest to the eye, and record the vertex distance; for powers of ±5.00 D and above it should go on the prescription.

Trial frames are also used to let a patient try a new prescription in real conditions, walking or reading, before the glasses are made.

Check before you order

  • PD range against your patients: 54 to 70 mm covers most adults.
  • Whether you need a monocular PD setting; this frame sets the total PD on one dial.
  • Aperture: Ø38 mm takes full-aperture trial lenses.
  • Temple length: 140 to 170 mm.

Good practice

  1. Set the PD on the central dial before placing lenses.
  2. Adjust the nose pad so the frame sits level.
  3. Put the strongest sphere in the back cell, then set the cylinder axis on the scale.
  4. Record the vertex distance for prescriptions of ±5.00 D and above.

Care and maintenance

  • Wipe the frame after each patient.
  • Store the frame in its box.

Questions

UTF-5470A questions

Who is the UTF-5470A for?

Adults with a PD from 54 to 70 mm. For children or very wide faces, the UTF-4880A and UTF-T4880R go from 48 to 80 mm.

Can I set each eye separately?

No. The central dial sets the total PD. For monocular PD, choose the UTF-4880A or UTF-T4880R.

Which trial lenses fit?

Trial lenses with Ø38 mm rims; the effective aperture is Ø38 mm.

How many lenses can I stack?

Four per eye: three in front and one behind.

Planning a whole bench?Combine the UTF-5470A with the machines around it, and we quote them as one order.
